|
| Synonyms: [WOLLEA Bornet et Flahault, 1888: Sphaerozyga sp.]
|
Diagnosis:
Bornet et Flahault (1888): Thallus tubulosus, cylindricus, mollis. Fila subrecta paralleliter agglutinata vel leniter curvato-implicata, vaginis confluentibus. Heterocystae intercalares. Sporae catenatae heterocystis contiguae vel ab eis remotae. (Conf. Wolle, Fresh-water Algae of the United-States, p. 290, tab. 199, fig. 1.) |
| Type species: Wollea saccata (Wolle) Bornet et Flahault 1888 |
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous - colonial; colonies macroscopic, gelatinous, smooth on the surface, more or less cylindrical or subspherical, sometimes tube-like, submersely living. Trichomes of the same width along the whole length, more or less straight or slightly curved, uniseriate, not branched, not attenuated or widened at the ends, intensely constricted at cross walls; terminal cells rounded; irregularly or more or less parallely and densely arranged in common, diffluent mucilage. On the surface of colonies is the fine pelicula; sheaths around trichomes are absent. Heterocytes intercalar, solitary, causing probably the metameric structure of trichomes. Akinetes arise paraheterocytic, at both sides of heteocytes, in short series, spherical or oval.

|
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): Freshwater species; the type-species is known from several localities (stagnant waters) in North America (firstly joined to the substrate, later free floating). The second species (W. bharadwajae) was described from pond and paddy field bottom in India.
