Thiochaete

Generic name: THIOCHAETE Welsh, 1961. Nova Hedwigia 3: 39.
Synonyms:
Diagnosis:
Type species: Thiochaete chutteri Welsh 1961. - Monospecific genus, revision needed.
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous - colonial; thallus in form of flat gelatinous mats with densely interwoven filaments attached to the substrate. Trichomes heteropolar, uniseriate, with basal and intercalar heterocytes, more or less cylindrical, slightly tapering to the ends, constricted at cross walls. Sheaths thin, narrow, limited, fine, colourless, unlayered. Cells more or less cylindrical, rectangular with slightly rounded ends, with very pale blue-green or almost colour less content, not divided in chromato- and centroplasmic regions, sometimes with solitary, prominent granules (probably sulphur granules); the end cells conical-rounded. Heterocytes hyaline/spherical
or elipsoidal in terminal (basal) positions, cylindrical (rectangular) when intercalar; basal heterocytes develop from end cells, or intercalarly from two neighbouring divided cells, from which arise two heterocytes one near another; the trichome divides between two intercalar heterocytes, which remain later in terminal position. Akinetes were not observed.
Genotype differences, molecular
data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): Cells divide evidently crosswise to the trichome long axis. Reproduction not described, probably by hormogonia.
Ultrastructure:
Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy:
Cyanophyceae, Nostocales, Nostocaceae, Anabaenoideae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): The type species was found in a very polluted stream of organic nature (effluent of a creamery), attached to the stony substrate, in the Vaal River, southern Transvaal, South Africa. Never revised, further observations are necessary.
