Sirocoleum

Generic name: SIROCOLEUM Kützing ex Gomont, 1892. Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., ser. 7, 15: 347.
Synonyms: [SIROCOLEUM Kützing, Species Algar., p.259,1849 ex Gomont, 1892: Lygbya, Sirocoleum, Chtonoblastus, Hydrocoleum, Microcoleus sp.]
Diagnosis:
Gomont (1892): Fila elongata caespitosa, fruticulosa, subdichotome ramosa. Vaginae firmae aut vix diffluentes, haud coloratae, cy- lindraceae, non lamellosae,
chlorozincico iodurato non caerulescentes. Trichomata intra vaginam numerosa, in fasciculos plures distinctos saepe aggregata; apex trichomatis rectus; cellula apicalis conica, haud capitata.
Diagnosis of Dasygloea Thwaites, [in English Botany, tab. 2941, 1848. - Kutzing, Species Algar., p. 272] ex Gomont 1892: Vaginae amplissimae, hyalinae aut luteo-fuscae. trichomata. intra vaginam paucissima, valde remota. Apex trichomatis rectus, haud capitatus.
Type species: Sirocoleum guyanense Kutzing ex Gomont 1892. - About 8 species.
Description:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous; filaments joined in gelatinous mats and later more or less erected fascicles, usually long, commonly branched (only sheaths), with limited, more or less cylindrical, firm, homogeneous, widened, colourless or slightly yellowish sheath, which is in small distances transversally constricted, but not longitudinally lamellated. Sheaths contain several up to greater number of trichomes sometimes freely, later densely parallely aggregated in fascicles. Trichomes cylindrical with straight ends, usually unconstricted at cross walls. Cells more or less isodiametrical or slightly longer or shorter than wide, without calyptra.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): Cell division crosswise, perpendicularly to the long axis of trichomes. Reproduction by motile hormogonia, separating from trichomes by help of necridic cells (?).

Oscillatoriales, Phormidiaceae, Microcoleoideae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): Mainly periphytic species, growing (four species), other species known from thermal and mineral springs.
Gomont (1892): Plantae marinae.
