Pseudoncobyrsa

Generic name: PSEUDONCOBYRSA Geitler, 1925. Beih. Bot. Centralbl. 41 (2): 237.
Synonyms:
Diagnosis:
Type species: Pseudoncobyrsa lacustris (Kirchner) Geitler 1925. - One species.
Descriptions:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Colonies ucilaginous, more or less polarized, attached to stony substrates, gelatinous, more or less hemispherical or flattened, (to 2 or more mm high), with cells situated in distinctly «branched», divaricate, radially or vertically oriented rows, enveloped by gelatinous, tubular and confluent sheaths, and, moreover, cells with individual spherical, distinct, delimited or diffluent, non-stratified envelopes (staining !). The whole colony is embedded in homogeneous mucilage with distinct margin. Cells more or less spherical, ellipsoidal or cylindrical with rounded ends, sometimes up to 25 um long.
Komárek (1992): Unicellular - colonial; thallus joined to the stony substrate, gelatinous, more or less hemispherical or flattened (up to 2 mm in diameter), with cells, situated in distinct "branched", radially or vertically oriented rows, enveloped by gelatinous tubular and confluent envelopes and, moreover, by own spherical but not layered envelopes, which are distinct or more or less diffluent. The whole colony is embedded by homogeneous, limited mucilage. Cells large (up to 25 /um long), ellipsoidal
up to shortly cylindrical cells with rounded ends, with slightly granular content.
Lager bildend.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Cell division probably only perpendicularly to the long axis of the radially oriented cells. Reproduction imperfectly described, probably by solitary cells. (Since the cell division proceeds irregularly in more than two planes, the genus belongs to the Entophysalidaceae).
Komárek (1992): Cell division not described, probably predominantly perpendicularly to the longer axis of radially oriented cells, or sometimes irregularly. Reproduction not described.

Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy:
Cyanophyceae, Chroococcales, Synechococcaceae, Synechococcoideae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): The type species described from the stony littoral zone of the lake Bodensee (Switzerland/Germany). Very little known and not revised genus, possibly a stage of an bangiacean species (Rhodophyceae).
