Diagnosis:
Type species: Planktolyngbya limnetica (Lemmermann) Komárková-Legnerová et Cronberg, 1992
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous; filaments solitary, with thin, simple, colourless, but firm sheaths, very exceptionally with false branching; trichomes cylindrical, isopolar, straight, waved, coiled up to more or less screw-like or spirally coiled, narrow, up to 3 μm wide, uniserial, usually not narrowed to the ends, indistinctly constricted or unconstricted at the cross walls, always immotile. Cells cylindrical, rarely shorter than wide, usually longer than wide (up to several times), without aerotopes or with facultative polar aerotopes, some- times with solitary granules; end cells rounded or narrowed-rounded, always without calyptra. Cell content pale grey-blue, blue-green, yellowish or olive-green, thylakoids localized peripherally along the cell walls.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): Cell division by the crosswise binary fission, perpendicularly to the long axis of a trichome, daughter cells grow +/- up to the original size before the next division. All cells capable to divide. Reproduction by fragmentation of trichomes without necridic cells into immotile (?) hormogonia.

Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): Planktic species, usually in large, mesotrophic reservoirs; several species are limited only in tropical and warm areas of temperated zones, several species are presumably nordic.
