Descriptions:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Colonies microscopic, free floating, hollow, in young stages irregularly spherical with holes, later more irregular in outline, flattened, wavy or hemispherical, arcuate, clathrate or composed of subcolonies, in old stages usually elongate and lobate, with one to three layers of more or less radially or irregularly, densely distributed cells. Around colonies fine, colourless, homogeneous, watery (diffluent at the margin) mucilage. Cells spherical, with or without gas vesicles (two different genera?).
Komárek (1992): Unicellular, colonial; colonies free-floating or mixed with-other algae 1 and among water plants, microscopic, flattened, irregular in outline, clathrate and waved, composed of subcolonies, with cells situated irregularly in one plane, in a layer of 1-3; young colonies more or less spherical, old colonies irregular, many-celled. Colonial mucilage fine, homogeneous, colourless, diffluent. Cells spherical or slightly elongated (before division), after division hemispherical, pale blue-green, with or without gas vesicles, sometimes surrounded with special fine, diffluent mucilaginous envelopes.

Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Cell division in two planes in successive generations, perpendicularly to the surface of the colony into two equal parts. Reproduction by colony disintegration.
Komárek (1992): Cell division in two directions perpendicular to the surface of the colony. Reproduction by the disintegration of colonies.

|
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): Free-floating (planktic) in lakes, small reservoirs, sometimes in slightly salinic water. One species originally attached to filamentous algae or submersed plants, secondary living meristonic.
