Type species: Myxohyella socialis (Setchell et Gardner) Geitler 1925.
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Pseudofilamentous; thallus composed from multiseriate, repeatedly irregularly, laterally divaricated ("branched"), creeping pseudofilaments, only at the ends uniseriate and with characteristical apical growth, enveloped by fine, thin, mucilaginous, colourless, not layered sheaths, which do not confluent together. Cells more or less separated one from another, within pseudofilaments in irregular nematoparenchymatous rows, or (in basal parts) in pseudoparenchymatous clusters; cells are irregular, apical cells usually a little elongated and rounded.

Geitler (1932): Thallus in marinen Algen lebend. Fäden mit Ausnahme der Spitze mehrreihig, unregelmäßig seitlich verzweigt, mit deutlichem Spitzenwachstum, frei, nicht seitlich miteinander verwachsen. Membranen mehr oder weniger verschleimend, Zellen daher mehr oder weniger
isoliert. Fadenverlauf in alten Lagerteilen oft verwischt. Endoeporen unbekannt.

Komárek (1992): Cell division irregular in more planes in successive generations, in pseudofilaments, particularly at their ends, with prevailing crosswise binary fission. End cells divide occassionally into nanocytes. Reproduction probably only by nanocytes.
