Mastigocoleus

Generic name: MASTIGOCOLEUS Lagerheim ex Bornet et Flahault 1887. Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., ser. 7, 5: 54. [MASTIGOCOLEUS Lagerheim, Notarisia, vol. I, p.65 ,1886]
Synonyms:
Diagnosis:
Bornet & Flahault (1888): Fila libera, irregulariter ramosa. Articuli, praeter ramigeros, unica cellula constantes. Rami biformes, partim cylin- drici, partim flagelliformes (in pilum attenuati). Vagina continua. Heterocystae singulae (rarissime binae) terminales vel laterales, numquam intercalares. Multiplicatio hormogoniis [et cellulis chroococcoideis?]. Sporae ignotae. Contentus cellularum homogeneus.
Type species: Mastigocoleus testarum Lagerheim ex Bornet et Flahault 1887
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992):Thallous; thallus composed from free, densely irregularly coiled, creeping filaments. Sheaths thin, firm, colourless, homogeneous. Trichomes always uniserial, with cylindrical cells, not or slightly constricted at cross walls, commonly irregularly laterally true-branched; branching of T- type; branches more or less short, 1-2- few-celled, terminated by apical, unipored heterocytes or long, continually tapering to the hair-like ends. Cells more or less isodiametric or longer than wide (especially in ends of branches), blue-green or pinkish. Heterocytes terminal at branches or lateral (laterally attached to trichomal cells), rarely interkalar, usually solitary, rarely in pairs. Akinetes missing.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): Cells divide crosswise and lengthwise before branching. Reproduction by hormogonia.
Ultrastructure:
Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy: Cyanophyceae, Stigonematales, Nostochopsaceae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): Marine; creeping epili thic on calcareous stones and on the surface of shells of molluscs, distributed over the European, South African and American coasts of temperated and subtropical zone. Data from freshwaters (M. testarum var.aquae-dulcis from rivers in Russia) should be revised.
