| Type species: Lithococcus ramosus Ercegović 1925. - Monotypic genus. |
Descriptions:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Colonies endolithic, irregularly reticulate, composed of randomly divaricate and anastomozing,
more or less limited and firm mucilaginous, filamentous strands, colourless, homogeneous, inside with uniseriate, irregular rows of cells, oriented parallel
to the strands; in places with widened mucilage, the cells are irregularly distributed; without special envelopes around them. Cells spherical, ellipsoidal
or oval, near to one another after division.
Komárek (1992): Unicellular - colonial; colonies endolithic, filamentous, irregularly net-like, composed from thin, mucilaginous strings, in which the cells are arranged in irregular rows with cells clearly distant one from another; old parts of strings are widened with irregularly disposed cells. Mucilaginous strings homogeneous, without any structures, special envelopes around solitary cells are missing. Cells spherical, ellipsoidal or oval.
Keine Spezialhüllen: Zellen in homogener, kaum sichtbarer Gallerte.

Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Cell division by binary fission, probably only in one plane in successive generations, perpendicular to the length of the strands. Reproduction possibly by liberation of solitary cells. Insufficiently known monospecific genus.
Komárek (1992): Cell division probably only in one plane, more or less perpendicular to the axis of strings. Reproduction not described, probably by liberated solitary cells or small clusters of cells in mucilaginous envelopes.

Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
|
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): The single species L. ramosus was described as endolithic, subaerophytic cyanophyte from localities in calcareous rocky areas in Croatia (Yugoslavia) and not yet revised or proved from other regions.
