Diagnosis:
Type species: Hyphomorpha antillarum-Borzi, 1916. - Three little known species.
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992):
Filamentous - thallous; thallus composed from creeping and/or erect filaments with common, irregular and repeated true, pseudodichotomous branchings, more or less polarized. Trichomes and branches of the same morphology, moniliform, torulous, uniserial and later multiserial (up to with five cells), in old basal parts sometimes forming chroococcoid clusters of cells; branchings of V- and T- type (latter in young, creeping trichomes). Sheaths thin, homogeneous, colourless up to thick, clearly stratified
and coloured (yellow-brown), enveloping the whole branched trichome. Cells subspherical, polygonal-rounded or barrel-shaped (in uniseriate trichomes), blue-green or violet, finely granulated. Heterocytes solitary, intercalar, usually flattened, shorter than wide. Akinetes not known.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): All cells capable to divide in different planes, in filaments usually mainly perpendicularly to the trichome-axis. Terminal cells of branches divide often repeatedly in nanocytes. Reproduction by nanocytes which liberate from the opened sheaths at the ends of filaments and branches, by solitary liberated cells (sometimes with own envelopes) and by fragments of filaments (rarely by hormogonia).

Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy:
Cyanophyceae, Stigonematales, Capsosiraceae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): Two species aerophytic and epiphytic, growing on bark and leaves of trees and on epiphytic mosses in tropical forests (Madagaskar, Antilles); one species grows on submerse wood in stagnant waters (Africa- Gaboon).
