Heteroleibleinia

Generic name: HETEROLEIBLEINIA (Geitler) Hoffmann, 1985. Cryptog. Algol. 6. 2: 76.
Synonyms:
Diagnosis:
Type species: Heteroleibleinia rigidula (Kützing ex Hansgirg) Hoffmann 1985.
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous; filaments solitary or in_groups, heteropolar, joined with one end to the substrate (usually by a pad or a short leg) and with free second end, with simple, firm, colourless, thin sheath enveloping the trichome and open at the apex. Trichomes thin, mainly up to 4 μm wide, uniserial, simple, +/- straight ("starr"), curved or slightly flexuous, not attenuated at the ends, constricted or unconstricted at the cross walls. Very rarely false branching with one lateral branch, after division of trichomes between two vegetative cells. Cells shorter up to longer than wide, cylindrical or barrel-shaped; end cells rounded or conically rounded, without aerotopes. Heterocytes and akinetes lacking.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): Cell division by symmetrical cross-wise binary fission, cells grow into the original size before the next division. Reproduction by motile hormogonia, liberating from the apical part of trichomes by help of necridic cells (?). Hormogonia join by one end to the substrate and germinate at the opposite end.

Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): All species are known from aquatic habitats, where they grow attached at different substrates (wood, stones, water plants, other algae, etc.). They occur in freshwater, as well as in marine biotopes. One species lives epizoic on planktic Crustaceans. The genus is known over the world, however, several species have limited areas of distribution or they are known only from few localities. Not yet in cultures.
