Gomontiella

Generic name: GOMONTIELLA Teodoresco, 1901. Verh. Zool.-Bot. Ges. Wien 51: 757.
Synonyms: CYANARCUS Pascher, 1914. Ber. Deutsch. Bot. Ges. 32: 151 (incl.)
Diagnosis:
Type species: Gomontiella subtubulosa Teodoresco 1901
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous; filaments (trichomes) solitary, uniserial, without sheaths, straight, short, flattened from sides and composed from C-like curved cells forming a tube-like formation with a norrow or wide opening along the whole trichome length, which can be localized straight or slightly screw-like on the trichome; cross walls slightly constricted or unconstricted, trichome ends not attenuated or slightly narrowed. Cells very short, flattened and curved, at the cross section in the form of "C". Heterocytes and akinetes lacking.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): Cell division crosswise to the long axis of a trichome. Reproduction by the disintegration of trichomes in hormocytes.

Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy:
Cyanophyceae, Oscillatoriales, Gomontiellaceae, Gomontielloideae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): The type species described from the drying pools on rocks in Romania. The validity of this genus was several times hesitated, because similar flattened and tube-like formation occur sometimes in different Oscillatoria-species as a drying effect (comp., e.g., Anagnostidis et Schwabe 1966). However, from the original type material exist several exsiccates (isotypes), which confirm the existence of this species. The genus was revised by Claus (1966), who described other species from
Hungary (aerophytic in caves, thermal springs); however, the genus needs in each case further investigations.
Geitler (1932; sub Cyanarcus): Kleine, dünne Stäbchen, deren stumpfe Enden bogig zusammengekrümmt sind. Einzeln oder ganz vorübergehend zu zwei bis vieren zusammenhängend. Längsteilung.
