| Type species: Fischerella thermalis-Schwabe ex Gomont 1895 |
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous - thallous; thallus usually felt-like, rarely in compact mats, composed from creeping, uni- or multiserial filaments and morphologically different, more or less erected uniserial branches. Creeping trichomes usually moniliform, enveloped by thick, waved, sometimes slightly lamellated and coloured sheath, with usually barriliform cells, sometimes enveloped by their own gelatinous sheaths; erected true branches develop usually unilaterally after the lengthwise cell division in basal trichomes (T-type of branching), usually cylindrical, with cylindrical and often elongated cells and thin, mainly colourless sheaths. Cells usually with slightly granular
plasma, thylakoids distributed irregularly over the whole cell content. Heterocytes intercalar, subspherical in basal trichomes, cylindrical in branches. Akinetes develop occasionally and irregularly in basal trichomes (known only in few species).

Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992):Reproduction by uniserial hormogonia, which seprate from ends of branches; they are usually morphologically very distinct (different from other cells in branches) and contain aerotopes (liberation usually during humid vegetation periods).

|
Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy:
Cyanophyceae, Stigonematales, Fischerellaceae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:About 15 species, from which only several are well known (and were isolated in cultures).
|
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992):Majority of species are subaerophytic, growing on wet (often acidic, peaty) soils, several species occur only in tropical forests (on bark of trees, mosses, etc.).
