Type species:  Ercegovicia litoralis (Ercegović) de Toni 1936 [= Brachynema littorale Ercegović 1931]
Description:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Thallus epilithic, in the form of small, microscopic, slightly globular or formless colonies, consisting of basal groups of irregular-rounded, ellipsoidal or pear- shaped cells, which are irregularly arranged and mainly enveloped by stratified sheaths (gloeocapsoid stages); later very short, only few-celled pseudofliaments are formed, which grow parallel to one another and vertically from basal clusters, and are pseudodichotomously or pseudotetrachotomously diversified;
sheaths around cells within pseudofliaments, or enveloping also the whole row of cells (pseudofilaments), sometimes stratified.

Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Cells in basal parts divide in various planes, apical cells sometimes divide into baeocytes. Still a problematic and not revised monotypic genus.
