Cylindrospermum

Generic name: CYLINDROSPERMUM Kützing ex Bornet et Flahault 1888. Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., ser. 7,
7: 249.
Synonyms: [ CYLINDROSPERMUM Kützing, Phycologia generalis, p. 211, 1843 ex Bornet et Flahault, 1886: Oscillatoria, Anabaena, Sphaerozyga sp.]
Diagnosis:
Bornet et Flahault (1888): Trichomata aequalia, brevia, evaginata, muco amorpho involuta, in stratum indefinite expansum aggregata; articuli cylindrici diamelro longiores. Heterocystae terminales. Sporae sub heterocysta ortae, singulae, rarius plurimae seriatae. (Conf. Thuret, Observations sur la reproduction de quelques Nostochinees, in Memories de la Soc. des sc. de Cherbourg, 1857, t. V; - Borzi, Morfologia, etc., in Nuovo Giornale bot. ital., 1878, vol. X.)
Type species: Cylindrospermum majus Kutzing ex Bornet et Flahault 1888
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992):
Filaments in fine or compact, mucilaginous mats, slightly curved or irregularly coiled, cylindrical along the whole length or slightly narrowed in the middle, without sheaths, but with very fine, colourless, homogeneous, diffluent mucilage, symmetrical, constricted at the cross walls. Cells cylindrical, more or less isodiametric or longer than wide, rarely barrel-shaped or almost spherical, without aerotopes, sometimes with dispersed granules and visible chromatoplasma, pale or bright, blue-green. Heterocytes always only terminal (arise from end cells), ovoid, oval or conical, unipored, developing at both ends of trichomes, rarely only at the one end (facultatively?). Akinetes develop only close to heterocytes, at both trichome ends, rarely spherical, usually oval or cylindrical, solitary or in rows up to 7, sometimes
with sculptured outer cell wall layers.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, celldivision:
Komárek (1992):Cells divide cross-wise and grow more or less into the original size before the next division. Without meristematic zones, all cells capable to divide. Reproduction by trichome fragmentation into hormogonia and by akinetes.
Ultrastructure:
Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy: Cyanophyceae,
Nostocales, Nostocaceae, Anabaenoideae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:About 50 species, several need revision.
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992):Mainly periphytic species, growing in benthos, on water plants and submersed woody and stony substrates, usually in not polluted and slightly eutrophized waters. Several species grow in soils. Mainly with geographically limited areas.
