Generic name: COCCOPEDIA Troickaja, 1922. Bot. Mater. Inst. Sporov. Rast. Glavn. Bot. Sada RSFSR 1:131.
Synonyms:
Diagnosis:
Type species: Coccopedia limnetica Troickaja 1922.
Descriptions:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Colonies microscopic, mucilaginous, flat, tabular, with cells irregularly distributed in one layer (without forming
rows perpendicular to one another). Mucilage colourless, homogeneous, with irregular outline. Cells spherical, without individual gelatinous envelopes.
Komárek (1992): Unicellular - colonial; colonies free living, microscopic, table-like or flat and waved, with irregular outlines, with cells arranged irregularly (not in perpendicullir rows) in one plane (layer), with usually greater amount of cells; common mucilaginous envelope is colourless, fine, diffluent at the margin; cells without own mucilaginous envelopes. Cells spherical, after division shortly hemispherical, with homogeneous, pale blue-green content, without aerotopes.

Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Cell division in two planes, more or less perpendicular to one another; cells separate from one another soon after division. Reproduction by colony disintegration.
Komárek (1992):Cell division by binary fission in two perpendicular planes, perpendicularly to the plane of the colony. Colony disintegration.

Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy:
Cyanophyceae, Chroococcales, Merismopediaceae, Merismopedioideae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:Two species
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): Both species are known from the metaphyton of swamps, one from freshwater (USSR, near Leningrad), the second one from salinic (USSR, Turkestan) localities.
