| Type species: Chroococcopsis gigantea Geitler 1925. |
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Unicellular - colonial; solitary cells or (rather) dense agglomerations or groups and/or pseudofilamentous rows of cells, not polarized (only initial stages), spherical or irregular, polygonal with rounded ends, sometimes slightly flattened from sides and of different size, enveloped by thin, firm, layered, colourless sheath (envelope). End cells in pseudofilaments or solitary cells sometimes club-shaped. Cell content blue-green, olive-green or reddish, with solitary granules. Chromatic adaptation.
Geitler (1932): Thallus aus haufenartig dicht beisammenliegenden, selten auf ganz kurze Strecken undeutlich fadenförmig und aufrecht angeordneten Zellen bestehend; Zellen oft einzeln, isoliert liegend. Zellmembran dick, oft geschichtet. Endosporen zu vielen (bis 64?) in vergrößerten Zellen gebildet.

Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): Irregular cell division in different planes in successive generations, sometimes with later prevailing division in one plane (formation of pseudofilaments); enlarged cells divide occasionally into large numbers (-64) of nanocytes, which liberate by an opening from mother enveloping sheath.

Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy:
Cyanophyceae, Chroococcales, Xenococcaceae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:Four described,
not well known species. Probably more taxa.
|
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992): Periphytic on stones in clear stagnant (lake littorals) and strea_ming water biotopes, usually in the mountain areas. Marine species not revised.
