Diagnosis:
Type species: Chondrocystis schauinslandii Lemmermann, 1899. - Three not revised species.
Descriptions:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Colonies free-living, more or less irregular or irregular-polygonal in outline, packet-like, gelatinous, laterally usually flattened or (in masses) slimy granular, later macroscopic, metaphytic or covering the substrate with a mucilaginous layer up to several cm thick, composed of numerous partial sub colonies, sometimes with precipitates (calcium carbonate particles). Subcolonies (small partial groups) surrounded by more or less cubic or polygonal flattened, widened, colourless, delimited slime, cells with individual thin, gelatinous, slightly stratified envelopes, usually following the spherical cell outline. Envelopes are partially thickened.
Komárek (1992): Unicellular - colonial; colonies irregular, gelatinous, from above more or less flat or slimy granular, macroscopic, covering the substrate in a layer up to 35 cm (?) thick, composed from partial subcolonies, fine, in lower parts with calcium carbonate precipitations. Cells with their own gelatinous, slightly layered envelopes, joined to small partial groups with wide slime, which are gathered within the common colony and form mucilaginous cell groups, flattened from all sides (irregularly polygonal subcolonies). Envelopes are partially thickened. Cells spherical
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek & Anagnostidis (1998): Cell division not described, probably in 3 (more ?) planes in succeeding generations. Reproduction by small subcolonies after colony disintegration.
Komárek (1992):Cell division not described, probably in more planes in succeeding generations. Reproduction by small subcolonies.

Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:One from very unsufficiently known genus, which needs revision, probably synonymous to CHLOROGLOEA Wille.
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:
Komárek (1992):Two species described from oceanic coastal lagoons (Hawaii-Laysan, Bermuda Islands).
