Aulosira

Generic name: AULOSIRA Kirchner ex Bornet et Flahault 1888. Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., ser. 7, 7: 256. [AULOSIRA Kirchner, Kryptogamenflora von Schlesien, Algen, p. 238, 1878; - Lagerheim, Bidrag till Sverige Algflora, p. 47; - Bornet et Flahault, Bulletin de la Soc.bot.de Franc, XXXII, p. 119.]

Diagnosis:
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous; filaments solitary or in groups or clusters, rarely in mats, slightly irregularly coiled, sometimes more or less parallel oriented, with firm, distinct, colourless sheaths enveloping one (rarely two) trichomes, opened at the ends (only exceptionally they occur young trichomes without sheaths). Trichomes of the same width along the whole length, not attenuated towards the ends, constricted at the cross walls, uniserial, isopolar, metameric (With several heterocytes
developing regularly in certain distances from one another along the trichome). Cells cylindrical or barrel-shaped, more or less isodiametrical up to longer than wide, blue-green, pale greyish-blue, olive green or reddish, very rarely with scarce aerotopes, usually with prominent granules; terminal cells not elongated, rounded. Heterocytes spherical, oval or cylindrical, usually of the same width or slightly greater than vegetative cells. Akinetes usually elongated, oval up to cylindrical, rarely spherical, developing always apoheterocytic (in rows between two heterocytes, and successively towards heterocytes), sometimes irregularly.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992): Cells divide cross-wise to the trichome-axis and grow into the original size before the next division; all cells capable to divide, without meristematic zones. Reproduction by hormogonia escaping from sheaths and by akinetes.

Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological
significance:

Komárek (1992): Mainly metaphytic species, growing in not polluted water reservoirs, usually among or on submerse water plants, or benthic. Several species are important members of the microflora in paddy fields (A. fertilissima). Almost all species grow in geographically limited areas of distribution, mainly in tropical regions (special ecology).
