| Type species: Arthronema africanum (Schwabe et Simonsen) Komárek et Lukavský 1988. |
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992): Filamentous; filaments simple, unbranched, rarely solitary, usually joined and tangled in fine, diffluent mats, microscopic, or later macroscopic, forming blue-green layers. Trichomes without mucilage, without sheaths, at cross walls unconstricted or slightly constricted, isopolar, slightly irregularly waved, narrow, 0.8-5 /um wide, uniserial, more or less cylindrical up to the ends,. immotile. All cells cylindrical, after division more or less isodiametrical or slightly shorter than wide, later up to 5-times longer than wide, without aerotopes, sometimes with several prominent granules within protoplast, with thylakoids arranged concentrically along the cell walls; end cells widely rounded or obtuse. Swollen involution cells appear in trichomes in dependence on the environmental conditions. Cell content intensely blue-green, without phyco-erythrin. Heterocytes and akinetes missing.

Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992):Cell division crosswise, sometimes asymmetrical; all cell capable to divide. Reproduction by trichome fragmentation in few-celled (up to unicellular) immotile segments, without necridid. cells.

Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
|
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological
significance:
Komárek (1992):The single known species, A. africanum, grows in wet, salinic places (drying pools) in desert areas (Libya, Kuwait) below the surface of sandy substrate. Probably more species exist with different ecology.
