Albrightia

Generic name: ALBRIGHTIA Copeland, 1936. Ann. New York Acad. Sci. 36: 85.

Diagnosis:
Type species: Albrightia tortuosa Copeland, 1936. – Monotypic genus
Descriptions:
Komárek (1992):Thallic, small clusters of free filaments; all filaments of the same morphology, flexuous, irregularly and freely tangled, laterally branched, cylindrical, composed from simple trichomes and sheaths; Sheaths thick, firm, homogeneous or layered (nothing is known about colouration). Trichomes uniserial, cylindrical, composed from moniliform rows of cells, with deep constrictions at cross walls, with a terminal growth; branches of the same width and morphology as the main filaments and trichomes; types of the true branching: T-type, pseudodichotomous V-type. Cells barrel-shaped up to cylindrical, narrowed at both ends, usually longer than wide, blue-green with a granular content and sometimes with prominent solitary granules; apical cells more cylindrical, end cells rounded. Known chroococcal stages (?, two-celled groups). Heterocytes and akinetes not known.
Genotype differences, molecular data:
Reproduction strategies, life cycles, cell division:
Komárek (1992):Cell division evidently by the cross-wise, perpendicular fission. Reproduction by two- or few-celled hormogonia, differentiating terminally at the ends of branches (rather known type in the Fischerellaceae). Disintegration of filaments, after which often persist the "chroococcoid" groups.
Ultrastructure:
Taxonomic position, higher hierarchy:Cyanophyceae, Stigonematales, Loriellaceae
Notes to taxonomy, misinterpretations:
Ecology, ecophysiology, ecological significance:

Komárek (1992): The type species is the single member of this genus; it grows among other cyanophytes or on the surface of their thallus in slightly thermal, alkalic springs in the Yellowstone National Park (U.S.A.). A little known genus.
